About
I grew up in California and now live in Italy. The years between those two facts took me through New York, Tokyo, Paris, Zurich, London, and Los Angeles. Somewhere along the way I founded Illume Candles, built a global brand, and spent decades designing products for some of the world's best retailers.
Then I started painting again.
Painting has become the part of my life where there are no briefs, no trends, no committees, and no one asking for another option. It's just me, a blank canvas, and whatever happens next.
I rarely start with a plan. I don't sketch much, and I almost never know what the painting is going to become. I make a mark, then another. Sometimes I cover up half the canvas. Sometimes I think I've completely wrecked it. That's usually the point where it starts getting interesting.
I work with acrylic paint, oil pastel, graphite, paint markers, collage, and anything else that earns its place. Layers build over time until something begins to appear. A flower. A bird. A memory. Or nothing recognizable at all.
Travel has always found its way into my work. A market in Marrakech. A doorway in Greece. A café in Paris. Wildflowers on the side of a road in Italy. I don't paint the places themselves. I paint what stays with me after I've left.
People ask how I'd describe my style. I usually can't. It changes. Some paintings are loud. Some are quiet. Some come together in a day. Others spend weeks facing the wall because they're annoying me. I've learned not to force it. Eventually they tell me what they want to be.
My paintings have been exhibited internationally, including the London Art Biennale, and are held in private collections around the world. I paint from my studio in Bassano del Grappa, Italy, where there's usually another blank canvas waiting.
